POLICY ISSUES

  • Increase availability of accessible, affordable, permanent housing 

    • Survey the availability of accessible, affordable, permanent housing

    • Build more accessible, affordable, permanent housing

    • Conduct building assessments for upgrades and modifications

    • Establish a resource or portal to search and apply for accessible, affordable, permanent housing

    • Coordinate with real estate listings to include indication of accessible features

  • Increase accessible public transportation and mobility options to allow people to move freely, easily, fairly and unafraid

    • Increase information, physical, financial, and geographic access in the For Hire Vehicle sector (taxis, Uber, Lyft, etc)

    • Invest & innovate in and expand public transportation, regional transportation and paratransit

    • Evaluate and improve entrances, egresses, sidewalks, crosswalks, curb cuts and ramps

 

  • Ensure that special education meets the needs of disabled students & their families

    • Fully fund our public schools to ensure up-to-date curriculum, first-rate buildings, smaller class sizes, and up-to-date resources, services and support

    • Ensure stellar special education services for all students with Individualized Education Plans (IEP’S) & Section 504 (of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973) plans

    • Ensure accessible buildings, online equipment, services, and supports

    • Clear and adequate communication to families - in their native language - about their rights as students with disabilities

    • Provide teaching that is inclusive of different learning styles

    • Provide a curriculum that is anti-ablist, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and inclusive of disability, and other marginalized communities, contributions to society

 

  • Ensure access to gainful employment, competitive wages, and accommodating services and supports

    • Establish initiatives and connect dots to put people with disabilities to work

    • Establish a business development council to raise disability consciousness 

    • Establish a talent coalition to connect talent to employment opportunities

    • Organize disabled job seekers & provide workforce development programming

    • Establish IT, cyber security & other technology-based job training 

    • Create partnerships for inclusive internships

 

  • Guarantee access at the polls and through absentee voting 

    • Ensure physical access to polling locations and voting machines

    • Ensure accessibility to the absentee voting process

    • Ensure effective, disability-conscious poll worker training

    • Ensure effective, disability-conscious voter engagement

    • Ensure that people will disabilities are represented in poll work/volunteerism

 

  • Work to make sure public, private & non profit institutions are just, fair, and inclusive, championing people with disabilities’ right to participate, proposer, and reach our full potential

 

  • Build community power together to make Detroit the most inclusive & accessible city in America!
